Biography

James is a founding partner at Wray Willis LLP. James represents policy holders in property damage, life insurance, appraisal, and business interruption disputes.

James is an effective litigator and trial lawyer. He began his career representing large creditors and banks in lender liability, wrongful foreclosure, and bankruptcy-related matters. After recognizing that he prefers to represent “the little guy,” James shifted his focus to consumer advocacy and, in 2015, joined a premiere first-party insurance boutique firm in Houston. James remained with that firm, ultimately managing its commercial property insurance docket, until Wray Willis LLP was established in 2023.

James has made hundreds of policy holder clients whole by trying cases to favorable jury verdict, reaching mutually agreeable settlements with insurers, or resolving cases through alternative dispute resolution procedures. James has also developed significant experience handling and assisting with appellate matters, and colleagues from other firms frequently consult with James on “big picture” issues that have the potential to affect the landscape of Texas first- party insurance law.

James graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Philosophy and English. After graduating from UT, where he competed on the debate team, James spent several years as a touring bass player, backing up multiple international recording artists.

In 2012, James graduated from Baylor Law School, where he was class president and won multiple advocacy competitions. After graduation, James served as the post-graduate teaching assistant for Baylor’s nationally renowned Practice Court program.

James was chosen by his peers to be a council member of the Insurance Law Section of the State Bar of Texas. He is currently on the CLE, Publications, Outreach, Scholarship, and Website-Social Media committees. James is also an associate editor of “Right Off The Press,” the State Bar’s weekly digest of insurance case law.

In his spare time, James enjoys spending time with his wife and young son, fishing, playing bass guitar, and watching San Antonio Spurs basketball.
